Over the years, The Village has grown and changed like any other thriving community. The saga officially began in Los Angeles in 2008, in the midst of graduate school at UCLA and USC. My now-wife and were all too familiar with the 150-seat chemistry lectures packed with students panicked at the breakneck pace of university level education. When these college students called us for help, in tears over their midterm grades, we recognized that these extreme feelings could be avoided and even eliminated with the right approach. We wanted to change the stressful, grade driven culture of school to one that focused on customized support. We knew offering one-on-one help would achieve this goal and great grades would be a byproduct of these efforts. Fast forward to 2013, while high level math and science were still our absolute favorite subjects, our experiences led us to a new recognition that we could alter the future of students by tutoring them from younger ages. Our youngest clients taught us new ways of learning and communicating and from them, we found even more ways to support our college students. Now, we prepare students for universities by teaching them the fundamentals of being successful at all levels and then teach them to share their story.

The Village is run by family and friends. As tutors, we’re in constant communication with each other, whether it’s figuring out a tough math question, deciding whose schedule allows a meeting with a teacher to advocate for a student, or confirming who is the best fit for a new client.

We are teachers and professionals, marketers, researchers, and writers who are passionate about what we teach, and that passion translates into students who love to learn. Our distinct and diverse expertise, dedication, and efficient methods of teaching and tutoring make us an ideal partner for students interested in being confident and assured individuals who will succeed in any academic endeavor.

John Anthony

Hey, I’m John! I was born and raised in San Francisco, always embracing city life. My path has since taken me from San Francisco to Los Angeles to Philadelphia and back to Los Angeles. Then I ended up on a one way ticket to Maui, with my wife, where we lived for 10 years, before ending up in Dallas.

I was always at the top of my class in school, and I still remember everything my 5th grade teacher taught me. I received a number of scholarships to universities all over the country, but I eventually decided on UCLA. I was a rower for four years and I majored in civil engineering. Right after college, I moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to pursue rowing and train for a spot on the National Team. I supported myself by working as a civil engineer for an awesome consulting firm.

While I was there, I met my now-wife, and moved back to Los Angeles to be closer to her. At the same time, I’d seen enough to know that engineering wasn’t going to fulfill me as a lifelong career, so I took up private tutoring for college students throughout the Los Angeles area. I mostly tutored math, physics, and chemistry at UCLA and USC, but I eventually expanded to tutor every subject, realizing I had a gift and desire to help kids understand everything better. 

I went back to UCLA for my Masters in education with an emphasis in social justice, and now my main focus is on helping students get into their top choice colleges. My current students are being accepted to schools like Dartmouth, Brown, USC, and Clemson. 

Matt FitzpatriCK

Hi, my name is Matt Fitzpatrick. I am proud to have grown up in Los Angeles and currently only live a short bike ride away from the school where I teach. Like my friends, I received my undergraduate and graduate degrees (Health Science and Education) from the one university: California Sate University, Dominguez Hills.

While I spend my days teaching high school students everything from Health to AP Biology, I spend a lot of my off days working with John and Lauren. We have been working together since 2013, the same year we attended each other’s weddings.

John and Lauren would probably say that my biggest attribute is relating to a student and making them feel safe and welcome. I think I get this because when I’m not working, I am exploring the city and am enjoying learning about new places and cultures by traveling to as many interesting places this world has to explore. This world view - and understanding current and emerging cultural narratives - has taught me to sit back and listen to the students, because the hours you spend in homeroom or advisory periods have just as much of an impact on your future as those AP classes. That’s where your story comes from.
